Agnes Pauline Wood, age 82 of Mishawaka, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2021, with her daughters by her side at Creekside Village Nursing Home. Aggie was born January 15, 1939, in Red Bay, Alabama to the late James Franklin and Ida Mae (Bullin) Powell. On June 18, 1957, Aggie married Willbren Wallace Wood in South Bend, Indiana. They celebrated 47 years of marriage before Willbren’s death in December of 2004, but Aggie’s love for him never ended.
Surviving are her daughters Diana (Robert) Seigler-Thornton of Bremen, Indiana, Elaine Wood-Balentine, Susan Carpenter and Judie Johnson, all of South Bend. Also surviving is her sister Nellie Reynolds of Osceola, an “honorary” sister Annie Malone-Williams of South Bend, her sister-in-law Sharon Wood, her brothers in law Chuck (Judy) Wood, Dale (Debbie) Wood, and her mother-in-law Sylvia Wood. Surviving as well are 6 grandchildren; Douglas Eric, Mathew James, Zachary Joseph, Jake Aaron, Grant Michael and Julia Ann, along with 8 great-grandchildren; Douglas Eric II, Gregory John, Zachary Scott, Lilah Bess, Ella Rose Mila Rose Zaden Michael and Isaac Drew. Aggie was preceded in death by her siblings Fred Powell, Marvin “Cotton” Powell and Carlee Massey, her brothers-in-law Wayne Wood and Geron Reynolds, and her sister in laws Ann (Charles) Meziere.
There will be no formal services for Aggie. Her family asks that you remember her in your own special way. Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Osceola is assisting with the arrangements.
Aggie was self employed for over 20 years as an in-home health care worker. Her Southern upbringing was reflected in the marvelous food she would prepare for her family and friends, especially her fried chicken, potato salad and cornbread dressing.
Most of all, Aggie and Willbren loved each other deeply and enjoyed fishing, playing music together, picnics, and enjoying the simpler things in life like traveling across the country with no itinerary or schedule so they could stop along the backroads and experience unexpected adventures together along the way. They loved hosting card parties and Willbren taught Aggie how to play cards and he wondered why he did! Whenever they would go to a casino, Aggie would spend hours upon hours at the card tables while Willbren would patiently wait for her to finish.
The Wood family would like to share their heartfelt thanks to both the staff and administrators at Creekside Village for the love and concern shown to Aggie during her time in their care and to the nurses and staff of Heart to Heart Hospice for the comfort and care provided in the last few weeks of Aggie’s life. A simple thank you will never be enough to express how grateful we are for those who helped with Aggie’s care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart to Heart Hospice. To light a virtual candle, share a story of Aggie’s life, or leave a message of condolence for her family, please follow the links provided on the tribute wall page above.
