Barbara “Barbie” G. Nelson, 42, of South Bend passed away unexpectedly at home, with her family close by her side. She was born September 3, 1981, in South Bend to Terry Duncan and Wanda (Winsett) Berry. On October 18, 2013, she met and married Charles Nelson in South Bend.
He survives along with their two daughters, Tatiana and Lilyana Nelson, in-laws, Terry (Joanna) Nelson, and Pearly Nelson, and countless extended family, including many very close cousins.
Before Barbie's decline in health, she dedicated nearly two decades of her life to serving as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in various facilities in both Indiana and Florida. However, her true calling resided in her unwavering commitment to nurturing her family and children. Barbie possessed a natural talent for orchestrating and coordinating family gatherings, being the driving force behind their planning.
Known for her independent spirit, Barbie marched to the rhythm of her own drumbeat, embracing her individuality amidst societal expectations. She found joy in exploring various interior design concepts from inspiration she found scrolling Pinterest. Barbie was also known for her selective palate, often considered a picky eater. She also had a unique habit of chewing ice, a quirk that added to her distinctive personality.
Beyond her human family, Barbie had a deep love for "fur babies," particularly when they were in their "cute" stage, having cared for dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, and hedgehogs. Despite her deep-seated love for sharks and her annual tradition of immersing herself in Shark Week, Barbie faced a profound fear of entering open waters, apprehensive of encountering these majestic creatures up close.
In the end, Barbie's legacy is not just one of dedication to her profession and family, but also of a compassionate soul who found solace and joy in caring for all. Though she may be gone, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched and the love she shared with those around her.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, and to honor Barbie’s life memorial contributions may be sent to St. Joseph County Humane Society or American Cancer Society.
