Benita Luz Hernandez

January 27, 1979 — February 3, 2023

South Bend

Benita Luz Hernandez, age 44, passed away on February 3, 2023, at her home in South Bend.  Luz was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho on January 27, 1979.  Her parents gave Benita the middle name “Luz” which translates from Spanish to English as “Light” and she was the light of numerous people’s lives.

Following her family’s move to South Bend, she graduated from LaSalle High School where she was involved as a student with the ROTC.  Later, she graduated from Davenport College with a master’s degree in business management.  Luz put her degree to good use as she helped numerous restaurants in the greater Michiana area such as Honkers Restaurant, Flat Top Grill, McAllister’s Deli, Pot Belly Sandwich Shop and King Gyros, become more efficient and profitable with her knowledge of both the restaurant business and her management skills.  Later, she accepted a position with Motel 6 in South Bend as their general manager.  Luz loved to cook and aspired to open her own catering business before her unexpected passing.

She is survived by the light of her life, her son Devin Hernandez and her newborn grandson Kay’Von Hernandez.  Surviving as well are her siblings Maris Hernandez, Curtis Davenport and Jose “Angel” Garcia Jr. and his wife Theresa, all of South Bend.  Luz is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Samantha Rios, Devonte Davenport, Paris Garcia, Taylor Garcia, Issac Garcia, Dominic Garcia and Roman Garcia, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews and many other loved family members from all across the country.  Her mother, Corina Garcia and her former fiancé, Lykell Smith preceded her in death.

A celebration of Luz’s life will be held at a later date.  Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Osceola has been entrusted with her care.

When Benita wasn’t working, she enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and cheering on the San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Saints.  She was also involved as a volunteer mom at Adams High School where she cheered on her most favorite athlete, her son Devin, on the football field and basketball court.

Luz was the rock of her family. She enjoyed planning parties, hosting family events and being the life of the party.  More than anything, Luz loved being a mother and grandmother.  Her warm smile, caring nature and generosity to others has left a legacy of love for her son to learn from and she will be greatly missed.
