Betty Jane Benson

September 9, 1956 — August 8, 2015

Betty Jane Benson, age 58, of Osceola, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Betty was born September 9, 1956 to the late Orval and Viola (Kolberg) Benson in St. Joe, Michigan. Betty earned a Bachelor’s Degree from IUSB, majoring in Women’s Studies, Sociology, and Communications. She met her husband Fred in St. Joe, and they were married on May 17, 1986. They recently celebrated 29 years of marriage.
Surviving is her husband Fred Story of Osceola, and their daughter, Danielle Benson-Story of Ft. Wayne. Betty is also survived by her siblings Bonnie Benson of St. Joe, Michigan, Beverly (Kenneth) Schultz of Ayer, Massachusetts, and Bruce (Melinda) Benson of Bradenton, Florida.
Early in her career, Betty was a journalist for the South Bend Tribune, covering the Osceola and North Liberty areas. She then was employed for many years as a real estate agent with Portage Real Estate, and most recently with FC Tucker Marketplace in South Bend. She was a member of the National Association of Realtors, and loved her career. She saw to it that her clients were treated fairly and received the service they deserved.
Her spare time was spent in the garden, belly dancing or cooking meals from scratch for her friends and family. Betty loved to play the piano, harp, and dulcimer, and enjoyed dancing with her husband Fred.
There will be a time of memorial calling from 5-8 pm Friday, August 14, 2015 at Zimmerman-Inman Funeral Home in Osceola. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Betty’s family, or to any local women’s shelter.
