Bobbie Eugene Hayden Sr., age 97 of Elkhart, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Bob was born March 29, 1927, in Ellettsville, Indiana to the late Charles and Elma (Taylor) Hayden. Bob was a graduate of Jimtown High School where he was a standout athlete on the basketball court. School. His exceptional skills on the court led his team to victory in the sectional championship in 1945, a milestone that marked the beginning of a celebrated sports career. Bob's contributions to local sports were recognized when he was inducted into the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame. Bob had the unique opportunity to play against the legendary Harlem Globetrotters, a memory he cherished throughout his life. On November 9, 1947, he married Margaret J. Watts in Osceola. They celebrated nearly 76 years of marriage prior to her passing in March of 2023.
Surviving are his children Katrina (Frank) Wruble of Edwardsburg, Michigan, Steven (Judy) Hayden, and Bob (Patti) Hayden Jr., both of Osceola. Surviving as well are 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings Madge Collins, Iris VanDeventer, and Ted Hayden.
A private graveside service will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, and the Hayden family will schedule a public celebration of Bob’s life at a later time. Cruz Family Funeral Home of Osceola has been entrusted with his care.
Mr. Hayden was employed as a truck driver for many years in the Michiana area. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame Football teams, always cheering them on with enthusiasm. He also enjoyed bowling and playing golf. A proud veteran of the US Army, Bob served with honor and later became a longtime member of the VFW Post 360 in Mishawaka, where he built lasting friendships and continued to serve his community.
Family was the cornerstone of Bob's life. He took great pride in his family and treasured the moments spent together at cookouts and gatherings. Known for his fun and outgoing personality, Bob had a special gift for making each of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren feel unique, giving each one a special nickname that they will carry with them forever. He enjoyed playing the guitar and had a passion for singing karaoke, always bringing joy and laughter to his family gatherings.
