Byron O. Boyer, age 83 of Mishawaka, passed away at home on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, surrounded by his family. Byron was born March 3, 1933 in Kendallville, Indiana to the late Victor R. and Dessie F. (Fenimore) Boyer. He graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1951. After college, he served honorably in the US Army in Munich, Germany from 1955-1957. On December 10, 1955, he married the former Betty Jo Willingham at the First United Methodist Church in Mishawaka.
Betty Jo survives, along with their daughters the Reverend Ciritta B. (Stephen) Park of Bethesda, Maryland, and Tamara (Robin) Lewis of Mishawaka. Byron is also survived by his grandson Kevin (Angela) Park of Miamisburg, Ohio, and one brother, James F. (Gwinola) Boyer of Knoxville, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his brother Victor R. Boyer, Jr.
Memorial visitation will be held from 2-7 pm Friday, April 29, 2016 at Zimmerman Inman Funeral Home in Osceola. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, April 30, 2016 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mishawaka.
Byron obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from Indiana University, where he excelled on the trampoline and lettered as a member of the IU Gymnastics team. He taught physical education and coached several sports in the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation, retiring from Schmucker Middle School after 33 years of service. Byron loved to fish, especially in Canada with his best friend, Terry, and was an avid bowler, inducted into the Elkhart Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2008. He was a founding member of Bent Oak Golf Course in Elkhart.
The Boyer family would like to thank Dr. James Reidy, Dr. Rafat Ansari, Dr. B. Tran and the staff of Michiana Hematology and Oncology, especially Lori R., for their care and concern for Byron during his time of need. A special thanks as well to Dr. David Jentz and Pamela Jentz for being the family’s “rock.”
In his memory, donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Bent Oak Golf Course for the planting of trees, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
