David J. Elwell

David J. Elwell, age 60 of Mishawaka, passed away at the Center for Hospice, Raclin House on Sunday, October 10, 2021. David was born June 20, 1961, in South Bend, Indiana to the late Leonard James and Hazel (Dayberry) Elwell.  On August 25, 1984, he married Sherry Breden in South Bend. They recently celebrated their 36th anniversary.

Sherry survives, along with David’s children Tabatha Elwell, Tonya (David) Smith, and David Elwell and his stepchildren Joey (Tania) DeWitt and Adam Breden.  Surviving as well is his sister Shirley Sawyer, 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by his brothers Leonard Douglas Elwell and Joseph Dewayne Elwell.

David was a hard worker, and he was employed throughout his career as a welder. Before his illness, he was employed by THOR Motorcoach. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, helping his neighbor trim and cut down trees, and working on his racecar.  David also enjoyed spending Sundays at the OC Dragstrip and raced at the US 131 Dragstrip in Martin, Michigan.  He also loved participating in Demolition Derby’s at the South Bend Motor Speedway.

Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the 1pm funeral service on Friday, October 15, 2021, at Cruz Family Funeral Home in Osceola, with interment to follow in Olive Cemetery, Elkhart.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made toward his final expenses by following the instructions on the "Donate" tab above.  Friends and family may also light a virtual candle in his memory, leave a message of comfort, or share a story of his life.
