Donald “Don” J Smith, 90, of Osceola entered final rest at home, Monday, March 3, with his family by his side. He was born in Rochester on July 7, 1934, to the late James and Evelyn (Young) Smith, and later married Patricia “Patty” (Boring) Smith, who preceded him in death April 2024.
Surviving are their children, Donnette (Doug) Patterson, Darren (Andrea) Smith, and Debbie (Ray) Hancock. Nine grandchildren, Joel (Sara) Patterson, Josh (Brittany) Patterson, Emily (Adam) Coppins, Austin (Addi LaCroix) Patterson, Michael (Morgan) Hancock, Matthew Hancock, Andrew (Cloey) Hancock, Adam (Britney) Hancock, Reagan Smith along with 10 great-grandkids and his siblings Thomas and James Smith also survive. Along with his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by a brother Albert, sister Louise (Smith) Clark, and great grandson Marshall Hancock.
Don dedicated many years of his career as a senior designer at Bendix, but his true passion extended far beyond the workplace. He found pure joy on the softball field, coaching his daughter’s teams at Southwest Little League, cheering on the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Cubs. Watching the Colts clinch the Super Bowl in 2006 and witnessing the Cubs' historic World Series victory in 2016 were moments he cherished deeply.
His love for music, especially the Big Band Era, was undeniable. With a trumpet in hand and a heart full of rhythm, he admired legends like Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. One of his fondest memories was seeing Louis Armstrong perform at his high school prom—a moment that stayed with him forever.
More than anything, Don was the rock of his family. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to chase their dreams, always offering unwavering support. No matter what challenges he faced, he never complained, always putting his loved ones first. His family was his greatest joy, and every moment spent together was treasured.
Above all, Don was a great dad—a role he embraced with endless love and devotion. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
A time to honor Don’s life is scheduled for Friday, March 7, 2025, from 12-2 pm, at Cruz Family Funeral Home. A service is scheduled for 2pm, with burial to follow at Olive Cemetery West, next to his wife, Patty.
