Douglas M. Hershberger, age 71 of Osceola, passed away at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. Doug was born September 1, 1950, in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Herman and Maryellen (Shipman) Hershberger. Following his graduation from Penn High School in 1969, Doug answered the call of his country and enlisted in the US Air Force where he achieved the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge in August of 1973. While serving, Doug earned the National Defense Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct medal. On May 6, 1995, he married Linda Lou (Good) Liska. They recently celebrated 27 years of marriage.
Linda survives along with his stepsons Charles Liska III and Scott Liska, both of Buchanan, Michigan. Surviving as well are several grandchildren, great grandchildren and his siblings, Danny, Dwayne, and Donald Hershberger, Debbie Cannon, Donald (Pam) Hershberger and Diane Hershberger, as well as numerous foster siblings and his spoiled rotten Jack Russell Terrier, “Leah.”
Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Friday, August 5, 2022, at Cruz Family Funeral Home in Osceola. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the 11am funeral service on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Cruz Family Funeral Home. Following services, the American Legion Post 308 Color Guard and officers of the US Air Force will render military honors at the funeral home, and the celebration of his life will continue at American Legion Post 308 in Osceola. Doug will be laid to rest on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan, Michigan at 2pm.
Doug was employed as an Adhesive Churn Operator with the Uniroyal Corporation in Mishawaka and continued on with the company as they became Royal Sealants and Adhesives. He retired in 2018 after more than 43 years of employment.
His love for his country and patriotic spirit will be remembered through his years of activity in the American Legion where he where he volunteered his time at both the State and local levels and served as an officer. He also loved to ride his motorcycle and was a longtime member of the American Legion Riders, helping to raise thousands of dollars for the families of his fallen brothers. He also helped numerous people by donating blood regularly and was a former member of the Moose Lodge and Indiana Civil Defense.
