Frank James Fanin Jr., age 59 of South Bend, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024. Frank was born July 6, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois. Frank dedicated over 25 years of his life to his work as an automotive painter at AM General. He was particularly proud of being the very first employee to work on the iconic H2 Hummer in the H2 plant. His exceptional skill and pride in his craft were evident in every project he touched, and he was a proud member of the UAW Local #5.
He is survived by his children Aaron Fanin, Eddie (Brandon) Hickman-Simmons Jr., Andrew (Krystal) Fanin, Kayla (Dwayne Trippett) Thompson, Steven (Mercedes) Fanin, Stefanie (Anthony) Peffley, Zach (Kara) Lane and Emilee Fanin and 21 grandchildren. Frank is also survived by his loving companion, Joanne Mathes and his former wife, Carmel Hollars. Surviving as well are his brothers, James D. Wheat Jr. and Allen L. Wheat, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Frank Fanin Sr., his mother, Barbara Sue (Branam) Henry, and his former significant other, Tina Gray
Saturdays and Sundays were reserved for watching NFL football, NASCAR races and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with his sons. In his spare time, Frank found joy in the great outdoors, spending countless weekends camping and tinkering with his RV and golf cart.
But above all, Frank's greatest pride was his family. He will be remembered as a loving father to his 8 children and a doting grandfather to his grandchildren who he spoiled endlessly. His home was always open to anyone and everyone, especially on Friday nights, when friends and family would drop by to share a cold drink and warm conversation. Frank had a unique gift for making others laugh, and he made it his mission to brighten the days of those around him.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 pm Friday, August 30, 2024, at Cruz Family Funeral Home in Osceola, with funeral services to follow at 6pm. Frank will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at a later date.
