Garland Thomas “Pete” Magyar, age 77 of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Elkhart General Hospital. Pete was born August 2, 1938 in Lawton, Michigan to the late Nick G. and Faye M. (Boatman) Magyar. Following graduation from High School, Pete enlisted in the US Army, serving honorably from 1955-1962.
Surviving is his daughter, Shannon L. Thompson of Michigan, and four grandchildren; Eli, McKayla & Serafina Thompson, and Abby Magyar. He is also survived by his siblings Joan Anderson of South Bend, Mary Ellen (Chuck) Grove of Osceola, James (Dolly) Magyar of Bristol, John (Judy) Magyar of Elkhart, Joe (Sharon) Magyar of North Carolina, Alex (Carol) Magyar, Fred (Joan) Magyar, Steven (Tracy) Magyar, and Michael (Sandy) Magyar, all of Elkhart, along with many nieces and nephews and his longtime caregiver, Brenda Jones. Preceding him in death were his siblings Janet May Magyar, Lois Toth, Jack Magyar and William Magyar.
Visitation will be held from 10am-12pm Friday, March 25, 2016 with funeral services to follow at 12pm at Zimmerman Inman Funeral Home in Osceola. Interment and Military Honors will follow in Osceola Cemetery.
Pete was employed as an Ironworker for 37 years with the Ironworkers Local # 292 until his retirement in 1995. He was a longtime member of the Osceola United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post # 308 of Osceola. In his younger years, Pete enjoyed traveling, especially going on cruises, hunting, and playing cards with friends.
