Our beloved John Robert Penn, Jr – known lovingly to those closest to him as “Johnny Bob” – passed away at his home on Sunday, December 4, 2022, at the age of 65.
John will be remembered for his creativity, exactivism, and good humor, which permeated his many projects, jobs, and relationships. He always enjoyed adventure, be it far or near, and on more than one occasion, found himself the ringleader of shenanigans, which often were reimagined through his art and storytelling.
He was an avid reader and consumer of facts, and especially enjoyed studying military history. John meticulously researched the details and context that surrounded notable events, inspiring him to surface those facts in creative ways. He was an active WWII reenactor, which granted him the ability to express his creativity and flair for the dramatic, as well as to celebrate his love of history. He also funneled much of his artistic talent into creating massive, miniature-scale installations of WWII battles, many of which he used to inspire others, especially young people, to take an interest in history and develop an appreciation for the past.
When he wasn’t creating, John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, hosting bonfires, and making conversation with new and old friends at his favorite, local cafes.
Throughout his life, John took on many identities. He was a son, brother, and uncle. He was a proud member of the US Army. He was an incredibly talented and creative artist and designer. He was a historian and armchair philosopher. But his proudest and most enduring identity was that he was a follower of Christ.
In the last few years, John endured many health issues that compromised his physical strength and resolve. However, he remained optimistic and found comfort through the love and companionship of his friends, family, and in his faith.
He is survived by his mother, Mona Penn, and his sister, Leslie (Brian “Max”) Podell, both of Granger, Indiana. Surviving as well is his niece, Aubrey (Matthew) Diamond of Albany, New York, and his longtime companion, Jill Mark, of Mishawaka, Indiana. His father and namesake, John Robert Penn, preceded him in death.
In lieu of a traditional funeral and memorial service, John requested to have a private fellowship with his close family and friends, which will take place after the new year, as he would love to be remembered through the outrageous and funny anecdotes of his friends and family that celebrate all that was good and happy in his life. He touched the lives of so many people. He will truly be missed and will never, ever, be forgotten.
Though his body may have failed, his spirit is and will always be stubbornly strong –
When peace, like a river attendeth my way
When sorrow like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
