John “Pete” Thomas Jenkins Jr., age 87 of Mishawaka, formerly of Apple Valley, Minnesota, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, December 4, 2023. Pete was born November 30, 1936, in Abington, Pennsylvania to the late John Thomas Sr. and Delores (Wood) Jenkins. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janice Jenkins of Mishawaka, formerly of Apple Valley, Minnesota and their daughters Tami Joy Jenkins of Avon, Colorado and Karla (Michael) Reed of Mishawaka, as well as his grandchildren Sierra and Anthony Reed, both of Mishawaka.
Following his high school graduation, Pete proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1961. While serving his country, Pete met the former Ms. Janice Samuelson while attending the same church in Minnesota. They spent many Sunday afternoons at her parents’ lake house in Willmar, MN where Pete would enjoy home-cooked meals and many hours of fishing. Following his military service, Pete pursued 2 years of higher education at Northwestern Bible College; he and Jan were then married in Minneapolis, MN on June 29, 1963.
Pete's professional journey led him through the ranks within Coca-Cola, where he started as a delivery driver and worked his way up to become a regional sales account rep; he worked for Coca-Cola for 26 years before retiring in 1990. Pete then embarked on a new chapter, joining the ISD #196 of Apple Valley as a custodian for the next 10 years. As a long-time member of Berean Baptist Church, he also served as a dedicated deacon, led bible studies, and played an active role in the youth group. It was with an open heart that he endeared himself to everyone around him, filling them with warmth, joy and his infectious smile.
A passionate fisherman, Pete found solace at his lake cabin in Minnesota, where he built lifelong memories with his family and friends. His love for the outdoors and his enthusiasm for fishing brought him peace and fulfillment, but his faith in God and showing God’s love was the guiding force in his life. Pete embodied the values of kindness, generosity, and integrity throughout his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a genuine connection with others that will live for eternity in the hearts of those who knew him.
