Kenneth D. Holderread, age 86 of Elkhart, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 15, 2015. The Mishawaka native was born March 30, 1929 to the late Halley and Goldie (McCreary) Holderread. Kenneth was enlisted in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 195o. He married Toshiko “Susie” Sakurai in Tokyo, Japan in 1951. She preceded him in death, passing away in 1999. On June 14, 2003, he married Charlotte Welsh-Cole in South Bend.
Charlotte survives, along with his children; Terrence L. (Theresa) Holderread, Daniel R. (Marie) Holderread, Cathy (Michael) Troup, all of Elkhart, and Sherry A. (Christopher) Mekras of Palmetto, Florida. Also surviving are his step-children Charlotte Dawn (Jeff) Ferguson of Wisconsin, and James E. (Kimberly) Cole of Mishawaka. Kenneth is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren and 11 step-great grandchildren, as well as his sisters Iona Miller of Mishawaka and Rebekah “Elaine” (Alfred) Lambright of Middlebury. He was preceded in death by his siblings Arno, Eldon, Harold and Aaron Holderread and 2 grandsons Kyle Holderread and Jay Allen Trout.
Kenneth was employed as the terminal manager for a trucking company, and most recently worked for Kem-Krest Corporation in Elkhart, retiring in 2006. He was also the school principal at New Life Christian Academy from 1978-1982 and assisted Pastor Lester Summerall at LeSea Ministries where he served as an Elder with Christian Center Church until the mid 1990’s. He also served as an Associate Pastor at New Life Christian Church, and was currently an Elder at Christ Chapel Church in South Bend.
He loved travelling around the world, and was very active in his church. In his spare time he enjoyed doing puzzles, train watching, and spent time restoring an old Studebaker.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Zimmerman-Inman Funeral Home in Osceola. There will also be one hour of calling prior to the 11:00 am funeral service on Friday, September 18, 2015 at Christ Chapel Church; 3402 Locust Road, South Bend, Indiana. Entombment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
