Leo Willard Goehring, age 93, passed away at Memorial Hospital in South Bend on Thursday, February 27, 2020. Leo was born McPherson County, South Dakota on December 18, 1926 to the late Jacob S. and Pauline (Job) Goehring. Leo was a graduate of Hosmer High School, class of 1944. Following his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy during World War II, serving honorably until his discharge in 1946.
Surviving is his son, Lynell “Lee” (Cherri) Goehring of Mishawaka, Indiana, two grandchildren Jason (Tara) Goehring and Tiffany Goehring, and a great grandson Keegan Goehring. He was preceded in death by a son Larry Goehring and his siblings Walter and Raymond Goehring.
Cremation will take place and a graveside service with military honors will follow in the Spring at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka, Indiana. Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting with the arrangements.
As a young man, Leo worked closely with his father Jacob and developed Goehring and Son Grain Elevator in Hosmer, South Dakota. He later struck out on his own and founded the Home Grain Elevator Company where he worked as the owner and operator until selling his business and moving to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1967. Upon his arrival in Sioux Falls, he took a job with the maintenance department in city services and worked for them faithfully for 26 years until his retirement in 1993. Later, Leo worked part time as a flower delivery driver in Sioux Falls for JW Perry Inc before moving to Granger, Indiana in 2013 to be closer to his son Lee.
In his spare time, Leo enjoyed fishing for Walleye, reading his bible daily, attending church services at Arborwood Assisted Living Center and, in his retirement, writing poems. Leo was also a proud Veteran and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 189 in Hosmer, South Dakota.
