Lois Jean (Schultz) Holmgren

South Bend

Lois Jean Holmgren, age 82 of South Bend, passed away Friday, March 4, 2022, at Memorial Hospital.  Lois was born January 30, 1940, in Mishawaka, Indiana to the late George F. and L. Helen (Mason) Schultz. She was a graduate of Mishawaka High School, class of 1958, and later graduated from Purdue University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1962, and her master’s degree in 1968.  While on campus, she met Peter L. Holmgren and they were married on August 11, 1962, at the Osceola United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Peter L. Holmgren of South Bend and their children Evan D. Holmgren and his wife Bethany and Kristina Kempf and her husband Eric, all of South Bend.  Surviving as well are four grandchildren and a great grandson, along with her sister-in-law Joyce Schultz of Florida.  Her brother, Fred Schultz, preceded her in death in 1983.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at Cruz Family Funeral Home in Osceola.  A private graveside service in Osceola Cemetery will follow at a later date.

Lois was employed for seven years as a teacher at Nuner Elementary School before transferring to Riley High School to continue her career.  After the birth of her children, she became a Licensed Insurance Agent for the American National Insurance Company and served then needs of her clients for over 30 years before her retirement in 2014.  During her employment, she was recognized by the LUTC for her achievements in underwriting throughout her career.

In her spare time, Lois enjoyed farming, raising lambs, and was a longtime supporter and leader in 4-H of St. Joseph County.  She served as a leader in foods and clothing for many years and mentored her children and grandchildren in 4-H as well.  She loved animals and enjoyed helping her family care for them on their farm.  Most of all, she enjoyed being a wife, mother and grandmother to her family.
