Richard J. "Dick" Springer

Richard J. “Dick” Springer, age 88 of Elkhart, formerly of Osceola, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 29, 2017.  Dick was born May 17, 1929 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Alex and Sophie (Golba) Springer.  Following graduation from Jamestown High School, Dick enlisted in the US Air Force where he served honorably for 9 years during the Korean War.  He spent several years of his enlistment in Germany and Anchorage, Alaska.  In 1951, he married Pattie L. Meadows, who preceded him in death in February of 2004.

Surviving is his daughter Pam J. (Patrick J.) Singer of Elkhart, and a sister, Arlene (Ralph) Flora of Mishawaka.  Dick is also survived by his grandchildren Michelle Kincses of Elkhart, Jacob Holland of Mishawaka, Pattie Jo Holland of South Bend, Donald Holland Jr. of Mishawaka and Stephanie Hendricks of Niles.  Surviving as well are his great grandchildren Alicia, Julia, Lucas and Gavin and great-great grandchildren Daniel Jr. and Noah.  Dick was preceded in death by his siblings Loretta Freel, Danny Springer and Dolly Cravens.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm Monday, October 2, 2017 at Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Osceola.  A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church.  Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Dick was employed by Whitehall Laboratories in Elkhart, retiring after 33 years as a machine operator.  He later worked part time delivering parts for Ridge Auto for over 10 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and playing golf.  Dick was an avid fan of Polka Music and enjoyed dancing and playing the accordion.  He was also a longtime member of the Moose Lodge, the American Legion Post # 308 in Osceola, and Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mishawaka.
