Robert D. "Amish" Emmert

August 15, 1925 — November 9, 2015

Robert D. “Amish” Emmert, age 90, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 9, 2015 at Hospice of Elkhart County. Bob was born August 15, 1925 in Mishawaka, Indiana to the late Edward and Jenny (Yoder) Emmert. On August 11, 1945, he married Barbara Funkhouser in Mishawaka, Indiana. They recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.
Barbara survives, along with their children; Peggy (LeRoy) Preston of Constantine, MI, Beverly (Tom) Hummer of Mishawaka, and Michael (Crystelle) Emmert of Granger. Bob is also survived by his sisters Thelma Platner of Ohio, and Donita Kennedy of Georgia. Surviving as well are his grandchildren, Kellie DeMeyer, Jill Mahnesmith, Erin Stears, Jill Hummer, Brooke Hummer, Robert Hummer, Rebekah Wachs, Trisha Taylor, and Katelynn Perigo, and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings Mildred Spear, Ralph Emmert, Ruth McClure, Doris Slane, Leonard Emmert, Norma Rice and June Dempsey.
Bob was employed as a semi driver and later as a mechanic for Norwalk Truck Lines, and retired at the age of 65 from Morgan Driveaway in Elkhart, where he spent many years as a member of the Teamsters Union. He and his wife Barbara were charter members of the Mishawaka Pilot’s Club, and he attended Osceola United Methodist Church for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time on Donnell Lake with his parents, cousins, and children, teaching them all how to waterski. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, gardening and in his younger years, SCUBA diving. He also enjoyed spending time tinkering with and fixing things around his house.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Zimmerman-Inman Funeral Home in Osceola. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the 11:00 am funeral service on Friday, November 13, 2015 at Osceola United Methodist Church, 431 N. Beech Road, Osceola, Indiana. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
In his memory, donations may be made to the Center for Hospice, or the Osceola United Methodist Church.
