Elkhart

Ruth Ann Shirley, age 81 of Elkhart, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the Waters of Wakarusa.  Ruth was born June 6, 1943, in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Vanus and Edythe (Woodworth) Miller.  While out late one evening, she met Tom Shirley at a small diner in Elkhart and they hit it off immediately.  Tom and Ruth were married on June 16, 1962, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Elkhart and were looking forward to celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary.

She is survived by her husband Thomas L. Shirley of Elkhart and their four sons, Rich (Dee) Shirley of Middlebury, Indiana, Ryan Shirley of Elkhart, Jon Michael (Janelle) Shirley of Mishawaka, and Colin J. Shirley of Elkhart, along with 6 grandchildren, Katelyn Shirley, Skyler Shirley, Conor Ragland, Gracie Shirley, Griffin Shirley and Starr Laughman.  Ruth is survived as well by her sister Shirley Rumfelt and Richard Miller, both of Elkhart and her best friend since childhood, Esther Kent.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, David Miller, Peggy Basse, and Larry Miller.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Monday, June 10, 2024, at Cruz Family Funeral Home in Osceola.  There will also be an hour of viewing prior to the 1:30 pm funeral service on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at Calvary United Methodist Church of Elkhart with Pastor Paul Anderson officiating.  Interment will follow in Olive Cemetery West.

Ruth's life was a testament to the beauty of simple pleasures and the power of unconditional love. She found joy in the countless hours spent outdoors in her garden, growing beautiful flowers. Ruth also loved listening to music; especially Elvis Presley, creating memories of laughter and togetherness with her family. Ruth also loved to spend time in the kitchen cooking her famous lasagna and potato salad which were a hit with her family and friends at family gatherings. In her spare time, she enjoyed doing puzzles and spending time with her cats.

She was employed as a line leader at ER Carpenter and AccraPac of Elkhart for a short time, but Ruth's greatest pride and joy was her family. She adored her children and grandchildren, providing them with love and support. An excellent listener, Ruth offered advice that was both wise and kind, never passing judgment and always encouraging positivity. Her encouragement was a source of comfort and strength, and she made it a point to ensure that negativity never had a place in her home.

Faith was a cornerstone of Ruth's life. She was a dedicated member of Calvary United Methodist Church for many years, where she found spiritual peace and a sense of community. In her memory, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Elkhart.  To light a virtual candle, share a story of Ruth’s life, or leave a message of comfort for her family, please follow the links provided on the tribute wall tab above.
