Sally Jo Westlake, age 81 of Mishawaka, formerly of Hilton Head, South Carolina, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021 at Elkhart General Hospital. Sally Jo was born November 5, 1939 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Harvey William and Kathryn Louise (Minegar) Bonney.
She is survived by her son Jeff Westlake of Mishawaka and her grandsons CJ (Diane Meifert) Westlake of Bolingbrook, Illinois and Trevor James Westlake who is currently attending Utah State University in Logan, Utah. She is also survived by her former daughter in law Joni Engel of Dallas, Texas. She was preceded in death by her siblings Larry and Tommy Lee Bonney and her Maltese dog she rescued, who she believed actually rescued her, Bentley.
There will be a celebration of Sally Jo’s life at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at the Osceola United Methodist Church, 431 South Beech Road, Osceola. Cruz Family Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, masks or face coverings will be required to attend Sally's celebration of life service.
Sally Jo was a graduate of Mishawaka High School, class of 1957 and she enjoyed staying in touch with her high school classmates throughout the years. Later, she attended Ivy Tech and studied interior design. In 1981, Sally moved to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina where she managed the Crazy Crab restaurant in Harbortown for over 20 years.
In her spare time, she loved to dance and even taught lessons at Arthur Murray Studios. She was an active member of Osceola United Methodist Church in their caring ministries program.
Most of all, Sally Jo loved her grandsons. She enjoyed watching them play hockey and even had the opportunity to travel to New York City for a hockey tournament with her family. While there, she was able to see all the sights New York had to offer.
