Steven D. Douglas, age 67 of Elkhart, entered into Heaven on Monday, November 15, 2021, with his loving wife and family by his side. Steve was born April 22, 1954, in Kankakee, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth Douglas and Estella (Massey) Skinner. Steve was employed for many years in Mesa, Arizona with the Boeing Corporation where he built Apache helicopters for the US Military. While in Mesa, he met Lisa Nowacki and they were married on August 25, 2002. Shortly after they married, Steve and Lisa moved back to Elkhart where he was employed with Medtech building ambulances.
Lisa survives, along with his daughters Tracie Williamson of Illinois, Jennifer Espinosa of Indianapolis, and Bryanna Wright of Elkhart. Surviving as well are his grandchildren Destiny, Skylar, Tyler and Kinsley, a great grandchild, Carley and his sister Mildred Joy Douglas of South Bend. Also surviving are his in-laws, Dean and Sheilagh Nowacki of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his sisters Martha Jessie Douglas and Melba Jean Mulligan.
Following Steve’s retirement from Medtech, he spent his spare time enjoying his favorite hobbies, woodworking and gardening. He was also an avid fisherman, hunter, and a diehard fan of NASCAR racing.
Steven loved helping others and will be remembered for his kindness and generosity to those in need. A longtime member of Radiant Life Church in Elkhart, Steven showed other’s the love of Christ as he volunteered his time working the church’s food pantry. Helping others was something he did regularly and the compassion he showed through his donations to the annual “Angel Tree” during the holidays and the monetary donations given to the children at St. Jude Children’s Hospital are just two small examples of his compassion for others.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at a later date. Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Osceola is assisting with the arrangements.
In his memory, donations may be made to Radiant Life Church food pantry community outreach. To light a virtual candle, share a story of Steven’s life, or leave a message of comfort for his family, please follow the links provided on the tribute wall tab above.
