Thomas Eugene Slocum Sr., age 74 of Elkhart, passed away May 29, 2024.  Tom was born June 28, 1949, in Mishawaka, Indiana to the late Clyde and Lucille (Short) Slocum.  On April 11, 1967, he married Kathleen “Kathy” L. McMannus in South Bend, Indiana. They celebrated 53 years of marriage before Kathy’s death in December of 2020.

Tom is survived by his son, Thomas E. (Laura) Slocum Jr. of Elkhart, his grandsons Josh (Kellie Madden) Slocum and Jeff Slocum, his great grandchildren Jalyn Slocum, J.J. Slocum, Autumn and Chayse Madden, and Summer Grose, and his best friend Vic Griggs.  He was preceded in death by his siblings James Slocum, Joan Higginbaugh, and Clyde O. Slocum Jr.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Smith’s Chapel Cemetery, 29858 Redfield St. Niles, Michigan, 49120. Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service has been entrusted with Tom’s arrangements.

Tom was employed as a young man with the Gas Barn in Mishawaka and later took a position with Trophy Tops before becoming the plant foreman at Jason Truck Caps in Elkhart.

Tom was a true jack of all trades and a self-taught handyman. With skills ranging from wiring electric and plumbing to welding and working on his own cars, Tom was the go-to person for any task. His family could always count on him, as he never said "no" to helping out. Tom's pride and joy was his family, and he cherished every moment spent with his grandsons.

Tom was passionate about cars and loved attending estate sales and collecting tools. His fun-loving personality and penchant for teasing brought joy to his family and friends. In his younger years, Tom enjoyed fishing, bowling in leagues, participating in city softball leagues and tournaments, and playing golf.

Tom’s kindness, skill, and fun will be remembered by all who knew him. He leaves behind a family who adored him and countless friends who will miss his jovial spirit.
